Whatever
is running through this man's veins, it needs to be bottled and sold by
Coca Cola. At 19 years old, Ryan Power aka Phasen, has a musical
maturity and grasp that is well beyond his years. Eletronic at heart,
but organic roots spread across this album branching out in every
musical direction.
An almagamation of many styles and genres that are well heeled and well versed.
Bleeps,
glitches and melody create an other worldly feel, almost space like. A
meteor shower put on wax. It crackles, it hisses and buzzes before your
eyes.
This release has a retro feel to it, like Boards of Canada but has the
early innovative feel of Aphex Twin.
Fat anologue synths phased with modern digital synthetics.
Crystaline riffs, rounded basses and on more than one track, acoustic guitar.
The Acoustic guitar on "Beau" is heart wrenching.
Hip hop beats kick against that ambience and the song becomes tinged
with effervescent joy. Miniscule sine waves tinkle, trickle and offset,
taking the mood to another dimension and you happily go for the ride.
Does Phasen have no fear?
Well, if "Tropiconica" is anything to go by then this man is wearing a tuna swimsuit in shark infested waters.
Clocking
in at 10.42 and slap bang in the middle of this record, Phasen goes the
distance, punching out fractured beats that skip a nervous palpatation.
Acoustic guitars breathe steadily, calming the glitchy pulses. This
song shows the depth and scope that Phasen posesses. Pure
experimentation, it opens the air and sound waves leaving you feeling
relaxed and open eyed. Musical Ventolin.
I must confess that the first time I heard this record, I wasn't blown away.
It took a couple more listens to grasp what was going on and fully appreciate the work that has gone into this album.
"The Crisis is Over" is now a a firm favourite of mine. I'm glad I went
the distance, because if I had thrown the towel in, I would
not have been blissfully knocked out and had the smelling salts of
Phasen to revive me...
