Yellow6 - When The Leaves Fall Like Snow (Make Mine Music)

17 tracks of cinematic stripped down ambience.
This 2 CD disc is the latest release by Make Mine Music founder Jon Atwood.
On this recording, Atwood takes you on a tranquil twilight journey. A journey that is familiar, yet awe inspiring.
A watery stillness and calm created with delay dripping guitars and cavernous expanses of reverb.
A Labradford influence is more apparent on this album than other Y6 long players, as the tracks are stripped down and are mostly guitar driven.

"Moderna" is a prime example of how Atwood can hold your heart to ransom merely by wielding a guitar! Each note is well rounded, picked slowly and aches with reverb. Low minor keys give way to higher plucked ones. A musical dream state. Pass the Horlicks...

"Street." Suspense, a palpable something in the distance. Great guitar effects are used again here. Think Stars Of The Lid but much darker in ambience.

"You Can't Be Everywhere" is vintage Y6. A fuller sound with a slow minimal drumbeat. There is a hint of bass that slides gently as the guitars build slowly. YCBE drives towards uplifting crests of delay coated guitar that chime and reverberate, eventually bringing the song to an accomplished end.

Atwood has crafted the perfect night music, yet again.
I listen to Y6 whilst I read, drift off to sleep, and solely for pure relaxation. On every listen, Y6 have been able to bring a new dimension to such activities. This goes to prove that in music, less can indeed mean more.

Listening to the whole CD, which was recorded in Stockholm over a period of six weeks, you get a sense of the influence that the city held on Atwood's musical psyche. It can be quiet, dark and brooding at times but also is bright, pensive, and hopeful. Much like the music of Y6, it's a place you are happy to be...
